PROPANE FOR GAS FIREPLACE LOGS
Enhance your living space with gas fireplace logs, designed to offer all the benefits of a wood-burning fireplace without the smoke or ash. Depending on your fireplace usage and your home’s existing fireplace features, choose from vented or ventless gas logs. With their natural look and high heat output, gas fireplace logs are a modern decor addition that encourage cozy gatherings in your indoor or outdoor space.
Vented Gas Fireplace Logs
In order to use vented fireplace logs, your home must include a fully functional chimney. Vented logs burn like real wood, producing a more realistic flame than their ventless counterparts. However, they create only minimal heat, so it’s worth determining your intention with the logs: heat or aesthetic appeal. Be sure to open your chimney flue while the logs are lit to ensure burn residue is released outside of your home.
Ventless Gas Fireplace Logs
Unlike vented fireplace logs, vent-free logs do not require a functioning chimney to use. Instead, an approved firebox offers the correct conditions for ventless fireplace logs, which makes them a considerable option for homes with a closed flue or those that lack a chimney entirely. As there is no flue release, ventless logs project considerable heat into a living space. More than just a decor addition, ventless gas logs can be used as a real heat source for your home.
Propane Tank Sizes for Gas Logs
At My Propane Butler, we offer a range of propane tanks from 20-100 lbs to meet your heating and small appliance needs. Gas log fireplaces are most commonly fueled by a 100 lb tank, a relatively portable tank despite its heft. These tanks are used for smaller household appliances requiring propane, like cooking ranges and indoor/outdoor fireplaces.
Gas Log Installation & Setup
In order to use your gas fireplace logs, several additional components are required: a fireplace burner, a burner pan and a valve system. Decorative pieces like shaped stones or ember enhancements may increase the attractiveness of your fireplace but are not necessary to light and enjoy your gas fireplace logs.
If you’re curious about how to install your gas fireplace logs, we recommend contacting a certified fireplace installer to handle your gas fireplace log installation, as working with gas and flammable objects can be hazardous and should be left to a professional.

Gas Fireplace Logs FAQs
Gas fireplace logs are designed to help you make the most of your indoor or outdoor fireplace. Learn more about how to light, clean, and arrange your gas logs and more to keep your fireplace warm and beautiful for years to come.
How Do You Light Gas Logs?
- Depending on what kind of ignition system your gas fireplace has, you can manually or remotely light your gas logs.
-
For a manual piloted ignition system, turn the knob to “pilot” and press down. While depressing the control knob, push the ignition switch every few seconds until the pilot lights. Keep pressing the control knob for 30 seconds and then gradually disengage. Turn the control knob to the “ON” position.
-
For automatic piloted systems, simply find the wall switch near the fireplace and turn it on. The pilot will attempt to light which will be noted by a visible arc at the pilot and a ticking noise. Once the pilot lights, the logs will then come on as well.
How Do You Clean Gas Fireplace Logs?
- Begin by turning the gas that fuels your fireplace off, then disassemble your fireplace, taking apart the logs and burner.
- Inspect your gas fireplace system to ensure all components are in working order, and no damage is present. Use a small brush or handheld vacuum to clear away dust and cobwebs, remove any residue from the mantle and hearth using a damp cloth and polish any glass or metal to shine brightly while on display.
- Reassemble your gas fireplace and turn the gas back on.
How Do You Arrange Gas Fireplace Logs?
The arrangement of your gas fireplace logs depends on what type they are: vented or ventless. Vented logs can be arranged in any position you like, as long as you allow for gas and air flow by leaving about two inches of space between each log. Ventless logs typically need to remain in the positioning provided by the manufacturer to prevent flame contact and resulting carbon monoxide emissions.
How Do You Install Gas Fireplace Logs?
Gas fireplace installation is best left to trained professionals who are able to take the proper precautions when working with gas and flammable objects. Contact one of the certified installers at My Propane Butler for a thorough and efficient installation.
What Are Gas Fireplace Logs Made Of?
Whether vented or ventless, gas fireplace logs are typically made from durable ceramic fiber or a cement mixture. They are designed to withstand ultra high temperatures, sometimes reinforced with steel bars to prevent bending or cracking while aflame.
How Can I Tell If My Fireplace Is Vented or Vent-Free?
You can determine whether or not your fireplace can hold vented or ventless logs easily. Does your fireplace have a chimney with an open, working flue or some other venting system that runs to your home’s exterior? If so, then your fireplace is vented and requires vented fireplace logs. Ventless fireplaces are not attached to a chimney or other venting system. Ventless or vent-free fireplaces require ventless logs to burn and produce heat.
